Faith

"If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,” and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that?" ~James 2:15-16

James asks us, more like demands, and rightfully so, that we live according to what we believe. He even gives us a practical application of giving our brothers and sisters food and clothing to meet the commandment, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Then he connects this faith-action with one of Abraham's greatest moments of faith. James finishes this with "And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “AND ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS,” and he was called the friend of God." | 2:23 |

In Genesis 22, God tells Abraham to take his only son, Isaac, to Mount Moriah and offer up his life as a burnt offering. During the three day journey, Isaac notices they have everything they need for the altar, the fire, but no lamb. Abraham said, “God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.”

Abraham builds the altar, binds Isaac and lays him on the altar. Raising the knife to slay his son, God calls to Abraham and stops him. He said, “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”

Then God calls Abraham's attention to the ram He provides for the continuation of the sacrifice. Abraham names the mount, The LORD Will Provide.

How could offering your one and only son and giving basic needs be the same level of faith? Because just like Abraham understood, we should also know, God will provide. Sometimes giving the food and clothing away is the last of what we have. During desperate times, we don't know when we'll be able to replenish what we've sacrificed.

And just like Abraham understood God would have to raise up Isaac to fulfill His promises to him and his descendants, we have to understand God will provide for everything we, His church, need when we need it. We shine in our faith by being His hands and feet.
