Twist & Screw
I have an author friend, **coughs--Quinn Loftis--coughs** who I've named the Queen of the Twist & Screw, a little two-step all authors should learn. To create a hundred-percent more sympathy for her characters, she simply twists the proverbial knife a little more, adding pressure to move the blade a little deeper.
So, as I was stuck on my own unmoving plot point, I remembered her little dance of the Twist and Screw. Re-arranging my details, I found a new rhythm to twist the plot lines to, and a new beat to screw up the lives of my characters, and I've never had more fun.
